They were fine with both, but Valve got a bit salty over 'lost profits', made a rule about how all content in a game has to be available through Steam and removed games like Dragon Age 2 and the original Crysis 2 until EA would put all the DLC up on Steam, screw the customers who couldn't use it on both clients if that happened. Obviously, it didn't work like they expected (though they did get Crysis 2 Maximum Edition, Dragon Age 2 never returned to Steam), Valve lost EA games in the future, and they never tried using that again, despite stuff from Ubisoft and MMOs featuring content you need to buy in their own clients. Damn shame too, EA wasn't making you run a client in a client.
