I suppose one pro to the slug was it showed us a more cautious side of Han's charatcter after he spent the entirety of Hope being as reckless as possible. But yeah, the same criticisms mostly apply. I'm all for picking apart the prequels but I think some scenes are just there for entertainment purposes. That giant fish creature was there for a chase sequence and the punchline of "there's always a bigger fish" and the space slug was there for a scary moment.
