By itself TLJ isn't a bad movie, it's actually pretty good (aside from everything Finn and Rose anyway). The problem is it's episode 8 though, not a stand alone movie. As a sequel to 7, and overall continuation of the series it failed miserably IMO. Every single major plot point TFA set up, the TLJ literally threw in the trash just to subvert expectations as much as possible. There's nothing wrong with subverting expectations, but when you're doing it just for the sake of doing it, and not for the sake of the overall story it's not going to go over very well as evidenced by the movie's divisive reception.

I said it after it was confirmed Abrahams was doing Ep 9, it's going to be hilarious when JJ turns right back around and ****s on everything TLJ did, just like Johnson did to TFA. We will find out who Snoke was and about Rey's parents. Hell even just bringing Palpatine back tells you JJ is giving TLJ the middle finger right back with all it's "let the past die" marketing.

This is why I don't understand why people who liked TFA, but hated TLJ, aren't interested in ROS or act like TLJ ruined the series for them. JJ likes to give people what they want, Luke will be Luke again, all the questions the first movie set up will be answered. That's literally all he has to do and people will be satisfied. Throw in Palpatine as the final boss and you've got an easy movie to make.
