You can clearly tell that they were setting up Kylo & Snoke as the new Vader & Emperor in TFA. Therefore it would make sense that the epic final confrontation with Snoke would take place in the third movie. And then Rian Johnson goes ahead and kills off Snoke in the second movie, leaving the third movie without a logical big bad.
