My dad was a firefighter--the chief, in fact--when I was a kid. This was his volunteer job, in addition to running a small hardware store mostly by himself. After that, he worked in a warehouse, though that was only partly manual. After that, he went into asphault, and shoveled probably millions of 40lb shovels before going into concrete and swinging a ten pound hammer one-handed thousands of times a day and lifting 80lb forms on the regular. He didn't have any combat experience but his biceps were like cantaloupe sized.
