he stumbled upon a political goldmine of americans who cared more about getting a republican who was willing to say bigoted things than about sexual harrassment or toxic masculinity.
Republicans showed that they would rather protect and advocate for sexual predators than cede power when they stood by and defended Roy Moore.

When the soundclip of him talking about grabbing women came out, he was the republican candidate and the party had invested in him already.

Also, the movement did not really blow up fully until late 2017, well after trump was inaugurated.
