But I don't think the situations are comparable. For all his tough talk, the mango in chief clearly does not care about the people of Hong Kong. He went out of his way to throw the Kurds under the bus just this week, he's not lifting a finger for a group that is far less integral to US foreign policy.

There are definitely protesters in Hong Kong who strongly identify with Americans and are deliberately broadcasting that message to gain sympathy abroad. But I don't think that's reflective of any direct interference by the United States. There's a lot of direct evidence for mainland China's role in inciting violence from within the protests, for example, but we've had nothing comparable that shows any American influence.
