The Toriel bossfight is intentionally misleading and unintuitive to spare her unless you know what you're doing or are very good at figuring out the hints. It's also uniquely rigged so that if you think the solution is to lower her HP (which is a reasonable guess), you will suddenly crit and instantly kill her.
