He also fucking abused his actors, especially Shelley Duvall. On the other hand, it's a gorgeous piece of cinematography and psychological horror that is fucking fantastic in its own right. It's still pretty scary when you sit down and digest it all. A tortured piece of cinema, up there with Apocalypse Now in terms of trauma in production.
