Sometimes a certain universal standards can apply, like Columbus being a long revered criminal now vilified. However, you can't honestly downplay Gandhi's achievement as a strong moral role model for the whole world, even if some of his values may be a product of his time. And anybody with half a brain will clearly see Gandhi's life achievements are far more significant and "good" than anything Trump has done all his life. I mean MLK jr. had homophobic views, are we going to vilify him despite his positives vastly outweighing the negatives? Pretty much. If you hold someone by current point of view, everyone would be literally evil. The context and the period that made them matters too.
