It's rock. I don't think after the Aerosmith run dmc walk this way thing did we have rock mixed with rap until the late 90s with the horrible Korn/limp biscuit stuff.

Clearly you barely know what the fuck youre talking about. Other than the fact that Korn started in the mid 90s, youre also ignoring rap rock bands like Rage Against The Machine from the early 90s. Stupid. Maybe refrain from analyzing music again in the future.

As for Epic, it is and has always been considered rap rock. Its not really up for debate. The OPs friend is a moron. The song has always been recognized as a precursor to the nu-metal/rap rock genre. Wikipedia even classifies this song as rap metal. Not only this, but there used to be some controversy that The Red Hot Chili Peppers ripped off Mike Pattons vocals a bit in this song. Listen to Give It Away again, and then re-listen to Epic. I can hear it. Give It Away is rap rock also.

PS. This all being said, I dont even like rap rock (I do like Epic though), but at least I have working ears and a brain, that can recognize musical elements and genres. Ears. Try them some time.

Imagine arguing that a rock song with literal rapping in it isn't a rap rock song

This. Some peoples opinions are not equal to others opinions.
