Columbus is definitely a controversial figure. On the one hand, we know about the atrocities he and his crew committed. But on the other, he did open up the route to the so-called New World from Europe, which is the precursor to what we now have today in the Americas. This is fact, regardless of his navigation errors. Leif Erikson beat him to it, but there was no lasting impact achieved, as far as we know. I don't see why you would celebrate Erikson, if you're not going to celebrate Columbus, considering neither was first anyway, what with all the tribes people who were there already.

Yes he technically got it "wrong" but not to the degree people think he did.
