The hook that sold him on the movie was Todd Phillips telling him they'll sneak in a "real movie" under the guise of a comic movie and it honestly does seem like a script that originally had fuckall to do with comics and was adapted to be a comic story. It's a pretty good movie and Phoenix was fantastic in it, but he wasn't a great joker. Also even if he was he still wasn't better than Ledger. I agree. Deniro was in this movie. Think of Taxi Driver.
