nothing to do with being lied to, but this is actually true about history in general. the further back you go in time, the less likely the history we think is true is actually true. most things we base history on are primary sources, which are not necessarily reliable. when the only thing you know about a person, place, event, etc is one text from the time period that talks about it, it doesn't necessarily mean that one text is true. usually history has to be validated by secondary sources like archaeology or lots of different supporting texts unrelated to the other texts that confirm a similar narrative. you'd be surprised how much we know actually comes from a single source though
