Dont let me start paying for it when he died then.
Why not? First, they never had proof he died because you never gave it to them. Second, there is no risk of fraud from some simply making payments on the account. The fraud risk only comes when someone makes payments on an account that isn't theirs, then tries to use social engineering to gain access to the account "because I pay the bills". I've seen ex-wives do that and try to cancel their ex's insurance coverage on their car. If we took your dumb approach to it, I would have cancelled his policy, he would have been pulled over for no active insurance (Required in MA), had his vehicle towed, and gone through a mess with the RMV to get plate reinstatement fees waived.

Thankfully, Federal Privacy Laws have a lot more thought put into them than you seem to think, so I advised her I cannot cancel the policy without a copy of a death certificate. A couple days later the ex-husband called in and requested that we only speak directly with him due to potential fraud.

This literally has nothing to do with my situation. Complete false equivalency.
