I actually loved the tone. It was the best part. TMNT comics are all over the place in tone, while its adaptations are almost exclusively fun and light, so this was a very welcome addition to the adaptation library.

I have an issue where it's Leo's birthday and Donny gives him a sword that he can use with the nub from where he lost his hand, Leo isn't grateful at all, then the two of them and Mikey go fight the Shredder, who is the successor to the traditional Shredder (who is dead), who is, of course, Raphael.

Now see, that's what it looks like for a Ninja Turtles story to take itself too seriously.
I think the 2003 series hit the perfect balance between light-hearted/fun and dark/serious perfectly. It knew when to be upbeat and silly, letting the turtles do their thing, and it knew when to pull back and get serious when the situation calls for it.

Still my favorite iteration of TMNT to this day.
