I wasn't able to access to only Chinese language news I read though ( https://hk.appledaily.com/ ). I also think one of the biggest scary things, and what my girlfriend repeatedly warned me about, is you have to be very careful not to say things critical of the government. Even saying you supported Hong Kong (which I do) can land you in trouble. When her family would trash on Hong Kong we just said nothing. It was annoying, but I read enough articles about people being disappeared or at least brought to police stations over it that I just took her advice and said nothing.
