There's a reason why patients don't even remember the names of their doctors but can tell you who their nurse is right away. And I doubt a PGY1 knows more than a nurse that has been working for 20+ years but I'll let you believe that.

The reason is because the nurse spends so much time with the patient. I have alot of respect for nurses, they do alot to calm patients and their families and diffuse thse situations before they explode. Its physically demanding too. But nurses don't make any important decisions on their own. I mean for small stuff that requires minimal training maybe like wound dressings and whatnot.

Also, yea PGY1 most definitely knows more than a 20+ year working nurse. It just may take a few months for them to catch onto the basic. At that point they most definitely do.

Nurses make important decisions every single day. They are constantly triaging, prioritizing, managing care with very little resources given to them, etc. You obviously don't function as one to know everything a nurse does and how decision-making is part of their duties every single day. I don't function as a floor nurse anymore. I'm an NP, but even my job does not compare to what they do. But let's just agree to disagree, because I don't see us seeing eye to eye on this.
