Read an article in the Guardian about how Boris Johnson has been trying the Trump model of dealmaking in the UK and it hasn't been working. They correctly identified the problem - the Trump method requires that your own party follow you in lockstep, no matter how unhinged you sound.

I think it's a testament to the strength of the GOP nomination process. 1 year of all-out, winner-take-all battle, decided by the voters themselves, ending with an agreement to support the winner unconditionally. Whereas the Tory MPs can argue that Boris was elected by the party membership and MPs only, which is a tiny fraction of the party's voters.

The key is you need to give people an opportunity to air their grievances. If you don't do it in the primaries it will be done in the general, and then you lose votes. Democrats trying to get Democrats not to attack each other would do well to learn that.
