Perhaps I just dont understand the American school system, but can people not just pack their kids a lunch instead. Seems like if you cant afford school provided lunches you should probably do that.

If they can't afford the (presumably) reduced weekly/monthly cost of school lunch, what makes you think they can afford coldcuts and bread for the week?

School lunch is also often the only hot meal some kids have each day if not their only meal. It's just cruel to deny a child that.
