It was cool seeing in the new 52 and the movie how a teen (one that was a littlr bit of a misfit himself) would react to suddenly having powers.

The New 52 version was a bit lame in that he was basically kind of an asshole, and then he got adopted into the Rainbow Coalition foster family, which strained credulity a bit.

But the premise as a whole was okay, and the character designs were actually somewhat better, for the most part. Though the way he acts in the first few issues he seems far more likely to become a villain (or at least an amoral asshole) than he does someone who'd immediately become a selfless hero.

It almost kind of feels like they were kind of ashamed of just how cheesily optimistic, idealistic, and noble he'd been presented as in prior media (he was often shown being even more "Boy Scout" than Superman), so they kind of swung a bit too far in the opposite direction.

I did find it funny they took to my knowledge the most dark and gritty shazam story made a movie out of it and it was Perhaps the least dark and gritty dc movie.
