It's a fairly common word in academia to refer to groups of students who start the same program at the same time or even certain sub-groupings within that of students who will take classes together (in larger and more structured programs). It's a common term to describe a group of students, but it's not common to use it interchangeably with "classmates." The whole group is the cohort.
