Oh, back in the days when we were so innocent as to want standards from gaming journalism. Now we have to worry about the AAA Publishers buttfucking us with microtransactions and loot boxes. Nobody gives a toss about the nepotism in gaming journalism in light of that.
This was some of the stuff Gamergate was talking about. The fact that "Games Journalism" wasn't willing to call out negative press/stories on the AAA games because they needed their support to stay afloat.
People who think Gamergate was about femminists either intentionally or unintentionally didn't bother to listen to what anyone was saying.
That's how it got spun by the news outlets but that's because the news outlets had a vested interest in stopping it for the very reasons you're complaining about.
Imagine if IGN acted like Jim Sterling? They'd lose 87% of their sponsors inside of 2 months, be blacklisted from all interviews, events etc. No longer get review copies of games
