A full on nuclear war would not only kill off all plant and animal life via radiation, fireballs, and blackout, the sheer heat from the explosions would burn away the atmosphere anf would allow untold amounts of solar and cosmic radiation to bombard the planet's surface causing it to become further uninhabitable.
