A major problem is that the show has lost it's cultural relevance. At it's height it was the edgy show portraying a brazen view of American culture and family amidst a sea of family-friendly sitcoms. It was a reaction to shows that had come before it, it could be both familiar and shocking all at once.

But now, thirty years later? The view of American life that the show was once mocking has long since faded away, and the generation that grew up on The Simpsons are now adults - and much of the media has shifted to appeal to the generation that grew up on shows like The Simpsons. It's become the show to mock, rather than the one to do the mocking.

Thus the show ambles on, trying to take shots at modern American culture, and politics, and whatever else in an age where such mocking is prevalent. Rather than being the edgy new product, The Simpsons is the dinosaur lumbering behind trying to show that it's still relevant and that it can be just as cutting and clever as every other popular show today.
