Generally if you have an existing REAL ID Act-compliant ID card or license, you won't need anything besides your existing card to renew, but if you're going from a non-compliant to compliant card, you'll need to show proof of identity, such as a birth certificate, passport or passport card, employment authorization document, or permanent resident card (green card), proof of your Social Security Number, such as an SSN card, W-2 or pay stub with full SSN, and two proof of residency documents, such as a rental or lease agreement, mortgage bill, utility bill, or employment, medical or school document. If you have changed your name, you may also need an original or certified copy of your name change decree, marriage certificate or divorce decree.

Most states have already made the switch, although a handful are still lagging behind, namely Kentucky, Maine, New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Oregon, who have until October of this year. REAL ID will be mandatory for accessing federal facilities, including airports, starting October 1, 2020. A passport or passport card, DHS trusted traveler card, DoD ID, or federally recognized tribal-issued photo ID can be used instead.
