That's the point though, you can aspire and work at being better. It encourages an awareness and consideration. We can behave decently, or not and it sets a positive example to those around us. With the New Testament you have the forgiveness of sin and a redoubled encouragement to be the best you can. It's an open invitation, up to the individual to accept or decline.

So the belief is that because we are born sinners it is only though our Lord Christ that we can be saved. No one is perfect and free from sin, except for Christ

my thing is, though, is why?

I can maybe understand holding "sins" against people once they start understating what they are, but coming into this world with that already being held against you is pretty lame.
