People still game on consoles and pcs but they're also on mobile. As soon as phones can replicate or at least come close to a console gaming experience, which they are as 5g just came out, aside from grassroots movements most of the modern consoles will die off. A phone is simply too handy, so the gaming industry is gonna have to pull out some striking vipers/sword art online tech in order to compete with the mobile market. With things like the oculus out its just to continue settling for traditional gaming, especially with how complicated modern console gaming is(seriously, I feel like I need to get certified in order to play some of these games) so a soft reset in the gaming industry needs to happen. We already saw that simple games like Pokmon go can get massive followings so it's definitely looking like we're heading more towards AR and VR gaming and moving away from console gaming. Which should get people excited as they'll finally be getting some much needed vitamin d.

How are smartphones going to close the gap it has from consoles?

Even if we solely talk about streaming I don't think syncing up a controller to a phone and then getting that image on your television is going to be a simpler experience than what consoles provide. Then you've got internet connections on top of that.

There's a lot of ways mobile gaming could wreck console gaming you just named one way. If whoever the heck is running all this decides to have a casting feature with a gaming app that you can use your phone for its not hard to imagine people syncing up and having gaming parties with just their phones and a more integrated television system that completely cuts out the console middle man and creates a new way to game, one not so dependant on finger dexterity, but one that involves more movement so that its healthier, this seems to be the best path until we reach fully immersive gaming systems like that in Sao which aren't too far off.
