This is intriguing. It would be complicated to design a game with metroidvania-style exploration that you can still complete while simultaneously throwing away your ability to backtrack and explore. Anyways, as for my idea, how about an rpg where you fight by inflicting mental trauma? The goal would be to drive the enemy to give up and allow you to do whatever you wanted to them, or to dissuade them from fighting you to begin with. High level attacks take up more "Mental Points" and reduce your own mental resistences
Psychological combat, eh? I dig it. I'm imagining the dialogue system from Mass Effect but you can humiliate and embarrass people, blackmail them, threaten them, lie to them, etc, etc. with stronger options becoming available depending on which style you roll with.
