Most nerds don't even have good taste in film. The people complaining were the same people who complain about the following three films in their Youtube videos and shit. 1) Super Mario Bros was a great post apocalyptic movie, just not accurate to its source material and took tons of liberties. Even if the production was riddled with problems, the end product was still a fun movie. 2) Garbage Pail Kids wasn't a bad movie by any means. Some of the writing was iffy, and it was weird that a kid who looked like he wasn't 14 was trying to date a girl who looked about 20 named Tangerine -- and he was getting bullied by guys who looked like they were in the mid twenties. But otherwise - the practical effects were good, and it had just as many funny moments as it did terribly unfunny moments. 3) Troll 2 has some decent makeup and practical effects. It's poorly acted and has some awkward writing - but it's hardly the worst movie I've ever watched.
I go to horror conventions and see ACTUAL bad z-grade films. Some film makers I like, others are far, far worse than anything I just mentioned or than Sonic could ever possibly be. As for AAA releases, there have been plenty of movies far worse than the three I mentioned or Sonic, potentially -- the Robocop remake, the Emoji movie, etc. Yet tons of nerds actually liked the Robocop remake? That's a far bigger blasphemy than Sonic having long, skinny legs

Idk how you can say just people have bad taste in films and defend the Mario movie. It was legitimately bad. That isn't a nerd opinion that is an every sane person opinion.
I say that as someone who rented at least 5 times as a kid. ---
