TopicHow come some people choose not to retire?

A small handful of people are lucky enough to work jobs they love and are happy working there.

The vast majority of people live hand to mouth their whole lives, due to a combination of employer operations being designed to minimize worker pay (example: new hires are the largest salary bumps you get your whole career, because raises are designed to not keep up with your market value...because changing jobs is stressful and often requires moving to a new area, so workers are not motivated to do it) and decisions made throughout their lives that cause their living expenses to rise with what little salary gains they make.

Most of the people who choose not to retire are doing so because they must, not because they can.

Another factor is that the human brain was designed to protect against saber tooth tigers and not against complex trading algorithms, so individual investors are notoriously bad, underperform indexes, and generally do poorly in the stock market as a result of loss aversion.
