Trent's version is teen-angst anger and impotent rage, Johnny Cash sings it more like a broken old man who's seen too much and been through some harsh shit, and who just doesn't have the strength left to fight the dull sense of futility and despair. I personally prefer the NIN version, but I can also understand why some people (including Trent himself) get more out of the other version's interpretation. It's the last sorrowful dirge of a man too tired and worn down to feel anything other than wistful sadness. In my opinion both versions suck.
