i get that movies have been derivative of previous movies since movies became a thing. that's just how art works -- it builds upon itself.

but if you examine the biggest box office hits over the last ~5 years (at least), the vast majority of them are sequels or remakes. this is a new trend. and i dont really like it.

The only thing new about it is there are few adaptations among the list - the biggest earners have usually been adapted from something, and are rarely original stories.

By what metrics. I know this was a while ago, but i remember Interstellar being like the only top 10 earning movie of 2014 that was an original production

It's almost like there are a massive amount of movies outside the top 10 each year.
