A jian is double-edged, which precludes a lot of moves, like backhand weaves, forearm blocks, and so on. The idea is to cut your opponent, not yourself. Again, I'm not talking about combat effectiveness, but rather stage and exhibition work. If you don't respect the edge(s), it looks fake. I blunt my stage swords, but occasionally use sharp swords in practice to keep it real, and some of my partners actually use sharp swords on stage. --- If ballet was easy, it would be pointe-less ...
