This is a sad case in human nature.

The assailant is the epitome of entitlement. She knows her behavior will go unchecked because she understands that people will do anything to avoid getting involved. When the police came to arrest her, she was probably as surprised as if they'd been magical unicorns. She probably had absolutely every confidence that she would step off the bus and nothing would ever come of this incident.

We saw the people around her. We saw the bus driver keep going. We saw the women around her giving expressions as if to say, "She shouldn't have done that," without having the slightest hint of going for their phones. They simply hoped that the older gentleman was okay and, more presently, wanted to avoid invoking the wrath of the criminal psychotic who had now revealed herself to them.
