In the modern age?
People tweet/facebook it. It gets attention. Then a journalist says "Can I run a story on this" and they say yes.
Honestly go to any happening "viral" thing on social media and look through the comments, you'll see several "journalists" asking if they can run stories on it.
And people click it, like you clicked this topic, so it won't stop
I don't ever click on these dumb stories, so at least I can say I'm not contributing.

Wrong. Me viewing a gamefaqs topic is pretty much irrelevant and you wouldn't even know about it if I hadn't posted. Thing is, me posting had nothing to do with the story, so the content of it didn't even matter in the least bit. Plus the story was so lame that I won't remember it in like an hour. ---
