You couldn't have cashed it as it would have been made out to her. You could have destroyed it as another mentioned, but she could have put a stop payment on it and been reimbursed.

I applaud him for doing so, but in the end she would have not lost the money.

That's a regular check.

A cashier's check is a money order. That shit is as good as gone once it's sent. It can't be stopped. The only thing you get is a receipt that will tell you whether or not it was cashed.

A cashiers check and money order are two different items. A cashiers check means that it was made out to someone specifically. A money order is where the payee can be left blank until it is handwritten in. Thats why money orders are typically capped off at a maximum amount, in case its lost because as you pointed out its as good as cash.

You might want to read the article:
"

Bright and early Monday, she showed up at Citibanks flagship branch in Union Square.

They said they couldnt immediately cancel it because it was a cashiers check. I would have to wait at least three months before they could even start the process, and only if someone didnt cash it in the meantime, she said.
"

True, but at this point the only person who would be able to cash it would be the person the check is made out to, which wouldnt be such a bad thing since it was intended for them in the first place. In worst case, wait the three months, explain the situation to the person who was intended to have the check, and then make out a new check. My point being that some random person who found it would not be able to cash it because it would not be made out to them.
