After a certain point Id rather just pay someone to do it.

If said shop is reputable. Forgot where my friend took his dad's van to but the mechanic didn't align the drain plug correctly and stripped it and the oil pan when tightening the bolt. What shoulda been a $20-40ish oil change turned into $400+ because they had to change the oil pan too.

I would take my car in for an oil change if I want to combine both an oil change and general inspection at the same time. Though once I had to take it in because the previous mechanic over-tighten the drain plug and I simply could not loosen it when I was changing the oil myself.

No I totally agree. If its a chain or dealership, somewhere I know they have money to fight incompetence/negligence, Id certainly do it.

If its gonna be a single mom & pop shop that you dont know anything about them Id understand your hesitation for risk.
