Topic	One piece of dialogue in Fellowship of the Ring I dont get (spoilers)

So, did Gandalf wring out the whole tale regarding how Bilbo found the Ring in Gollum's cave? I seem to remember that Gandalf maybe did wring out more than what Bilbo said(to others like Thorin's company, he kept telling it was a prize he won fair-and-square from the riddle game or something), but to that extent? Of details like Gollum obsessing over the thing while calling it 'precious'? And surely, Gandalf wasn't 'familiar' with Gollum at that time, he only knew of Gollum from whatever Bilbo told him. It was only until a few years later(before Gandalf goes to the Shire to confirm it indeed is Sauron's Ring) when Aragorn captured Gollum in the vicinity of the Dead Marshes did Gandalf see Gollum in the flesh for the first time. It's still kind of dumb that he doesn't realize that Gollum's ring is Sauron's seeing as his purpose in Middle-earth is anti-Sauronness, but that's another issue. Didn't he think the Ring was destroyed at the time? No, he thought it was lost. Elrond knew Isildur took it, and it vanished when he was ambushed on the shores of the Anduin. As far as anyone knew, it was somewhere on the riverbed, but there was next to no chance of every finding it. It goes even further. Saruman, who is the so-called 'expert' on ring-lore, dissuaded everyone else from searching the river(the idea must have been proposed at least once by one of the Wise) by saying that it's obvious it tumbled down along with the flow of Anduin into the Great Sea. He said, "Let it lie there until the end, when the world is changed." or something to that effect. It's also implied that after turning the other members of the Wise away like that, he took to searching the river on his own, hoping to find it, not knowing that Gollum already went off with it years earlier. Esrac posted... DD Divine posted... My favorite part in the movie is when Gandalf leaves the shire and goes to Minis Tirith to study the possibility of it being the one ring. Then he rides back to the shire in what looks like maybe a couple weeks/months had passed, but in the book its been 17 years. I think it would be hilarious if in the movie it just faded to black and said 17 years later. The average audience would be like this Wizard was off reading books for almost 2 decades!! I Know they show a lot of dust around the envelope but still You know, I kind of think it sounds better for it to have been a matter of months, maybe a year. Instead of 17 years. Doesn't quite explain Bilbo's scene in Rivendell in that case, though. Frodo and Bilbo are a bit way too overjoyed at the reunion for it to have been an year or less, and even with the Ring no longer in his possession, in the movie Bilbo has aged far, far too much in that time. Even so, 17 years as in the book is a bit extreme, especially considering Sam, Merry and Pippin are all already visible in Bilbo's party in the movie yet they hadn't aged much if at all, either.
