Very interesting phenomenon. I'm reading Schopenhauer's Metaphysics of Love at the moment and his findings are quite incredible. He basically believed eros is an unconscious manifestation of the will-to-live, so according to him when you're attracted to someone your primary consideration is of the potential qualities of the offspring you would have together (to ensure the human race is faithfully maintained), not so much the love object themself. There's much more to it but that's the gist of it.
