Yeah as a guy who mildly enjoyed DQ9, I still can't understand the appeal of this series as a whole. I honestly think it's pretty bottom tier in the giant spectrum of JRPG series. It's just so boring

Like the combat either has 0 challenge or the solution to beating a boss that you couldn't beat is just level up more, which is something that smarter JRPGs have long moved on from. The story is usually just like "hey look at me, I'm silly, now let's go beat that demon lord." The battle system is gratingly boring with very little opportunities to outplay the game, where a bunch of cool sounding moves are hilariously bad compared to some other literally identical move with just a straight up better chance of hitting or doing more damage. Like there was just 0 fucking thought to a lot of these skills. It's so freaking bad. Subsequently the myriad of endless side quests makes me feel more like I'm doing a bunch of things that I don't enjoy but at a greater quantity.

Literally like baby's first RPG. It's a good gateway RPG at best, but Japan's massive boner for it confuses me
