From what I remember, it sounded like she would give her kid Xanax to quiet her down or make her fall asleep so she could just do whatever she wanted. Then maybe one day she gave her too much and she didn't wake up (could have suffocated or any number of things while out too), so she freaked and tried to hide it so she wouldn't get in trouble. Obviously the parents raised concerns right away when they didn't see their granddaughter, then it just snowballed from there.

I think the fault was in pressing for first degree murder or trying to get the death penalty. There was a lot of circumstantial evidence there, but it wasn't enough. If they went for involuntary manslaughter there might have been a better chance of having her do some time, but as it stands she got off pretty easily.

Edit: A lot of her behaviour after was pretty scummy though. The immediate return to partying while her daughter was supposedly "missing," all the shit with her dad, etc. She was definitely fucked in the head.
