It's likely they chose to phrase it as "over 1000" because the bank probably has a policy about scrutinizing checks over $1000. Some banks do that. Mine doesn't. My xmas bonus is usually around 1300-1400 and gets direct deposited and even before that I could deposit it via atm without even signing it and it didn't cause any issues.
