The Soviet Union had purges beginning with its inception due to unrest(similar conditions were also present after the American Revolution). The west knew about it. In fact some commentators drummed up the red scare in our country to purge people they didn't like. Most of them didn't care at the time though.
Yes, I know that. My point is, by 1955, the USSR is not some new, fledging country. The great purges and holomdor and whatnot are decades in the past at this point
Yeah, and? Einstein wasn't a Marxist Leninist so what's your point? The west already knew what happened in Russia. It happens in every revolution when a regime takes power. It happened in the United States back the late 18th century too or have you forgotten that as well?
