No, it isn't unfair. The problem comes when you idolize people as ultimate good, or a perfect example of a human being. People can do great things, yet be capable of extremely cruel acts. They should be lauded for those great things and condemned for their cruelty as well. Doesn't make them pure good or pure evil.

It's about nuance.
