my wife & i went over to another couple's house last sunday for brunch. while the women were talking in the kitchen, the husband calls me over to the living room and puts on football, and makes this joke alluding to how we would both much rather be watching football than having to listen to them talk.

then he tries making football small talk with me. my brain immediately goes into fire drill panic mode as i desperately attempt to remember any sort of NFL knowledge that i have. as the husband is talking about who he thinks is having a good season and complaining about some team's defense i am trying to recall the name of a single fucking football player.

I see Andrew Luck on the TV screen and I think "hmmm, I might have heard that name before." I unsuccessfully try to recall a single detail about the player but nothing comes out. The husband asks me a question intending to start a football dialogue and I debate going outright and saying I have no interest in sports, but I have absolutely nothing in common with this guy and I dont want to just put that all on the table since I will cross paths with him again. I consider the "actually, I'm more of a basketball fan" but then I am taking that risk of bullshitting through a sports conversation that I also know nothing about.

Finally, I "haha yea, yup, mhmm" my way through the football conversation with the husband and sit there in near silence as he flips between two different football games. It is now Tuesday and the thought of that moment still haunts me
