You have no idea what a good Metroid is, which is why you think linear ass Fusion is great.

*PSA: Being a sub par Metroid doesn't mean it's a bad game.

This is exactly the mindset that I don't understand about most Metroid fans. I say "most" because I count myself as one too. Having variety is a good thing. Super Metroid was awesome. Metroid Fusion was awesome. They had different design philosophies, and that's perfectly fine. Fusion isn't a "bad Meteoid game" because it had a different design choice from Super.

If I were to try to think this same way about some other series I like, Rising is a terrible Metal Gear game. The stealth is awful, and shuffled out of the way in favor of beatemup combat. The tone is way off. You don't even have any guns at all. And yet, it's one of the best games in the series. Plus, it actually still has a lot about it that is 100% Metal Gear despite not even being the same genre. Like the cutscenes, the story-heavy feel, multiple weapons you unlock as you progress through the story, the scifi feel stacked on top of real world political and social issues, the copious lore provided via codec, etc.

Likewise, despite shooting for a more story-driven feel than an exploration-driven one, it's a great game with a lot of what makes Metroid great. It's got the cool Ridley Scott feel, hidden upgrades, intense bosses, the sense of isolation, a single connected world that loops back around on itself, freaking terrible controls (like it or not this is a series staple), hidden areas, etc.
