once it comes down to large-scale hooking up on the basis of political ideology, the country may as well split apart

It's always been this way, you just didn't notice. People who get together and form relationships, so basically not the one night stand stuff, tend to be people who are compatible and hold similar values. Sure, "opposites attract" is a thing that could happen, but the reason why that whole phrase is even a thing is because the inverse is far more common.

And there's nothing wrong with that. You aren't entitled to a specific person or even to be friends and embraced by all people due to decisions YOU make about who you are. No one is born with a specific political belief or core value system, and people aren't obligated to interact with you in a personal setting if they don't want to.

There have always been differences in cultural norms and ideals governing sexual selection, and while some of these differences correlated with party, others didn't.

We have reached a point where those cultural norms can be identical, and even ideals, but voting choice alone - that is to say, the question of specific implementation - is the distinguishing factor.

We divide ourselves into tribes along so little as linguistics. It's ethnic divergence by another name, even within the same ethnicities.

No one is born with a specific political belief

There is a correlation between genetics and political disposition.
