The thing about that is machines can't fix themselves. People always say "omg the self checkout is gonna put me outta a job!" No people. Whenever the machine jams up or the circuits get fried they don't have the magical ability to fix it. Which is why the human is still working the self check. People freak out over nothing. We've seen this before. It was called... dun dun DUN! the Industrial Revolution.

...when you replace 100 people on a line with a bunch of robots, do you think suddenly 100 robot repair jobs open up or something?

and yes, surprisingly, cashiers are loosing their jobs due to self check out lines. because in the severely unlikely event that every self check out unit breaks all at once you've still got the 4 guys who were watching for theft who can shift over to the old lines as the repairman fixes shit.
