We talk about "life after death" but it's really impossible to say whether something is real or not when we can't even define it properly

What is life after death?

We use the word "life."

What's life? We are alive now. What makes us alive?

When we go looking for "life" on other planets, we are looking for carbon-based life.

There's a whole definition in biology of what is meant by life in terms of biological process

So what is life after death? How can life exist without any physical presence? There is no matter. What is it? Energy? Light? Dark matter? Something else that exists but that no known instruments can detect?

What would the experiment of such a life be? Would you see as you see now with your eyes? Would you retain a sense of self separated from your surroundings? How can that be when you have no physical presence? Would you have a memory of your life? How can that be if memory is physically stored in the brain? How can we consider the soul to be alive but at the same time consider it to be immortal, when we consider life is something that, by definition, is not eternal?

And even beyond, what makes us us other than the physical matter composing our bodies? Our bodies change with time. Our cells transform. Matter leaves our bodies when we sweat or even breathe. We are constantly changing. Where is the precise line where "I" begin and end?

It's like God

When I try to ask myself whether I believe in God, my answer is not "yes," it's not "no," and it's not even "maybe." I'm not even an agnostic. My answer is, how can I say whether or not I believe in God when I don't even know what God is supposed to be?
